December 15, 2005: A quick game
... but more than meets the eye

A colleague of mine gave me a link to a Cartoon Network Flash game called Splash Back today, and while it looks (and is, in principle) very simple, a little bit of consideration makes it much more interesting.
It’s a chain reaction kind of game, where you start off with 10 drops of green goo, and the game is over when you have none left.
You add the drops to the blobs already on the board, and when they grow large enough, they burst and send off drops in each of the four directions (up/down/left/right).
The bigger the chain reaction you manage to set off, the more extra drops you get. Each level/board is random, and the level of difficulty remains constant, so it doesn’t get harder the more levels/boards you clear.
At first it looked to me like it’s mostly about luck, that how many levels you can clear depends on how many “good” boards you can get in a row. But then I discovered that you can also place drops on empty squares, which means that you have a way of linking together areas of blobs that would otherwise be independent from each other.
I still haven’t gotten past level 8, though.

Well. 1:42am, 22 levels cleared. Good night.
