December 1, 2006: The Christmas Calendar Blog Run

Wherein I start another installment of daily blog posts, writing in green text on a black screen.

(I’m having a really hard time remembering if it’s an e or an a at the end of “calendar”. Any mnemonic tips on that one?)

I recently became a commuter, which means I now have at least an hour of time every day where I can do nothing but sit on a train. This is not a bad thing, as it means I can use this time for things like writing blog posts, which, judging by my blogging rate lately, I never get around to doing otherwise.

I’ve looked into the possibility of getting some kind of mobile Internet connection for my iBook, but there are too many tunnels and too little coverage on my ride. But I think this is a good thing, as it means I can use the time to do nothing but write.

And to aid me in my mission I’m using WriteRoom. Start it up and hit the Escape key, and you’re in a distraction-free retro-looking green-on-black terminal type environment. Pure text, pure productivity. And it’s free!

This is the greatest idea ever. A quote on the site summed my opinions up very well: “My job requires me to perform a lot of research online and therefore I’m constantly in a data-gathering mind set. After several hours of this, my brain becomes run down and I really just need to step back and remove as much distraction as possible while writing reports.”

Also, you might want to check out Mori, if you haven’t already. It looks pretty awesome as well.

I would like to state that WriteRoom is excellent for anyone wanting to write text on a computer (well, a Mac, anyway) – not just those feeling distracted while they write. You can never have too little distraction! :-)

About Mori: My first thought about any such software is that I need something that stores my data somewhere centrally, like on a web server—because I use three different Macs (work, home stationary and laptop) and would need such an application available on all three, with the same data available and up to date on all three whenever I use them.

Your comment reminded me of a web application I’m waiting for, though, and made me go search for it as I’ve forgotten its name, but in searching for it I found another, similar (and just as pending) web application—material for another Christmas Calendar post!

I was thinking the same too, but I’m planning on working almost entirely from home next year, so soon it won’t be so important.

I’m looking forward to your post, though!
